Development and Implementation of an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program
The aging of the US population has resulted in increased numbers of older patients with more complex health needs that is outpacing the capacity of existing workforce. Despite a rapidly growing knowledge base for care of older adults with complex care needs, fewer than 3% of advanced practice nurses are specialty prepared in geriatrics. Through a partnership with the Geriatrics Division, the Aging Center and Durham Community Based Organizations, created as part of the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), we developed a nurse practitioner fellowship program to address these needs.
